2D Toolkit
For 2D toolkit, I felt it was really beneficial towards the start of the unit, as many of the things we were covering massively improved the way I approached certain aspects of art. I think over the entire unit we were taught several ways to deal and think about art too, which affected all projects for the better, especially things like Real Worlds, where it helped the way I approached both the character and environment aspects.
In terms of the specifics, we looked at and tried things like photo bashing, perspective types, and life drawing. I am not really happy with how I approached toolkit this year - my biggest regret is not completely forcing myself out of my comfort zone and attending the nude life drawing lessons. I think these would've massively helped with my approach to character creation and anatomy, as well as just being more life drawing in general.
Throughout my projects, the things I have learnt through 2D toolkit can be found as I have implemented them into many different aspects. I look forward to practicing more anatomy within different character types. I also look forward to creating more tonal studies from photos to understand the composition of environment art better.
3D Toolkit
Toolkit this year has faced me against multiple challenges which tested my skills and workflows, especially within the 3D aspect. I have also spoken in the character project blog about my final thoughts on the project, but the same goes for the rest of the things we learnt this year - including ZBrush as a whole.
I am equally excited and nervous to learn more ZBrush and practice in my free time. This is because I am feeling myself starting to get a hang of a consistent workflow, but I also understand that ZBrush can be very punishing when you try to use something you're unfamiliar with, often being an irreversible change. This is different to other programs which allow new users to experiment with the functions and features of the program. Honestly, in my own time I am looking forward to creating a workflow between ZBrush and Blender that more effectively encompasses all the features and things that can open up due to this workflow. Despite that, I feel I did a good job with the latest character modelling project.
Overall, I am really looking forward to delving into the world of sculpting over the summer and creating my own models, iterating on my past mistakes to ensure my workflow becomes better and better with each task I undertake. I feel this toolkit has made me much more skilled within the 3D pipeline, as I am now able to be at least competent with all mainstream 3D programs.
