Industry Practice: End of year reflection

Industry Practice: End of year reflection

Looking back at the project, I feel we have produced a good-looking, functioning game that conveys what we were going for - A game that focuses on the struggle of different mental conditions. I think we have achieved what we set out to do, and in terms of my own individual efforts, I think I did really well with my contributions to my own character, their story, how they are portrayed, as well as sourcing all the different sound effects used in the game. Originally, I felt really anxious going into the group aspect of this project, yet it has turned out to be my favourite part. Emulating how work is done within the industry has made me feel much confident about communication overall.

In terms of problems experienced within this project, I was finding myself being burnt out partway through the project. This is because keeping up with several different projects was making me lose track of what I had in my own schedules. I think this is a problem that I can easily fix if I can commit to a strict schedule.

In terms of skills learnt from this lesson, these fall into two categories. Firstly, in terms of technical skills, I found myself being able to work much better over time drawing character sheets, sprites and within a specific format. This worked very well with the fact I was finding myself to be more efficient and faster at drawing over time. I also think I created a very unique and charming character with the jester, who I felt proud of the design for after I was finished with the project.

In terms of durable skills, as previously mentioned I felt that I was really easily able to communicate with my team. Going back to my character design and story, I feel like this was especially a showcase of everything I demonstrated creatively with this project.

In terms of what industry roles I was influenced by, It was mostly a character concept artist. This is because I really enjoyed the process of character creation and conceptualisation, as well as implementing that design into the final one. Overall, I feel like I can come away from this experience being able to draw and create concepts for a unique character design within a set timeframe, and communicate with a team to implement this into a game or a final design.

This entire project has been important overall to my career and future in the games industry due to all the skills I have learnt, most importantly those to do with working in a team. I feel like in the future, I will be able to draw upon my skills in communication and teamwork, and feel like I would be able to implement these skills well within an employment setting. In terms of skills I will work towards developing, these are mostly time management and efficiency management skills, due to me getting burnt out within the duration of this project. If I were to do this project again, I would probably contribute more to the team side of things first before developing my own ideas and assets.
