Real Worlds: Client Feedback

 Real Worlds: Client Feedback

This week was the client review. We each had a 10 minute slot to pitch our idea to the guys from Mantic Games. This was a brief window, so as seen in my previous blog, I made my presentation short with little text within it so they would spend less time reading and more time giving feedback.

First, the client spoke about things they liked about my designs.

Forge Fathers - Positives:

In terms of the positives for the Forge Fathers, they really liked the proportions of the character and the thumbnails. They said I got the overall shape and design language down, as well as making the characters the appropriate height. They really liked the concept for the game and the boss having a place within it as something the player will fight, furthermore, they liked the idea of the multiple phase fight with the changes between the phases.

Matsudan - Positives:

They said that the Matsudan armour set I had designed was really good, and they really liked the hat on top. They also liked the cloak and the weapon durability system I included, as well as the thumbnails for the different weapon types. Similarly to the Forge Fathers - they also liked the concept of the characters  place within the game as someone the player controls.

Next was the feedback they gave me regarding things I should alter:

Forge Fathers - Things to Change:

For the Forge Fathers, they want a thicker handle for the hammer, and a change to the pose to not lose detail since a lot of it is hidden. They also want more detail on the arm braces, and the dwarf to almost be "flattened": being made squatter and flattened a little bit. To compliment this, the chest plate should be pulled down, and the knee pads should be pulled up.

Matsudan - Things to Change:

In terms of the Matsudan, they said that the legs were too long and the waist was too high. Instead of 50/50 balance between the body and legs, it should be a 60/40 ratio. the trousers should be lower, the hips should be at more of an angle in that specific pose on the character sheet too due to them being wider and rounder. In terms of the head, the hat should be moved forward to obscure the face, and the head should be moved back.

I plan to implement all of these in the final character sheets as well as the key arts. Before the session concluded, I wanted to ask one last question.

How would the Matsudan and the Forge Fathers fight and interact?

When I asked them this, they prefaced their explanation by saying the Forge Fathers are not good people. They take everything that isn't nailed down. The Matsudan Ronin could be disgraced, seeking redemption after the Forge Fathers wiped out their squad (which could happen: the Matsudan are allies with the Asterians, which the Forge Fathers regularly fight).

This gave me the idea I wanted for the key art when I get around to designing it.
