Real Worlds - Deadzone: an Introduction to a New Project
Real Worlds - Deadzone: an Introduction to a New Project
Today we started the next project, which is going to be in two parts. It is going to include a written research element, include character and environment design, and give us a choice on how we approach the project, the options being either a 2D or 3D pathway.
For the pathways, they are as follows:
2D PATHWAY:
• Full colour design sheets
• 2 Characters + equipment +
customisation options
• 2 x Key illustrations
• Minimum 30 x thumbnails
for each character (60 total)
• Backstory for both characters
• Any necessary studies
3D PATHWAY:
• Black & white design sheet
• 2 Characters + equipment +
customisation options
• Rigged and textured
character sculpt
• Equipment model
• Minimum 30 x thumbnails for each character (60 total)
• Backstory for both characters
• Any necessary studies
This project is focused around digitising a tabletop IP. The deadlines are as follows:
Part one client review: 12/03/25
Part one deadline: 30/03/25
Summative deadline: 18/05/25
The client we are working with are called Mantic Games. They are open to working with new freelancers and aren't completely set on their own style, especially for character design. This gives me the opportunity to use my own style whilst drawing characters and environments to match the project. It also gives the opportunity for work placements on graduation, which will help motivate me to give my best work. For this, I created a checklist for my own work, so that I could be clearer on what I need to do, and since I want to make a good first impression with the client, I want to be able to deliver more than is needed. On this same note, I chose the 2D pathway, since I feel that is where my strengths lie mostly.
Part One Checklist:
First Character:
• Minimum 30 x thumbnails for character
• Backstory
• Research
• equipment and customisation options
• key illustration
• Design sheets (w/ colour)
Second Character:
• Minimum 30 x thumbnails for character
• Backstory
• Research
• equipment and customisation options
• key illustration
• Design sheets (w/ colour)
With this done, I moved onto creating the project management blog, where I will detail how I will go about scheduling and managing myself and my work.
