Building Alliances Group Meeting: final concept creation, aesthetic for the game, themes of the game
Building Alliances Group Meeting:
Today we had a group meeting based around the summative deadline for the pitch and the requirements for it, so we know what to do going forward with the project. Below are the notes I took to do with what we discussed, as well as annotations detailing what thing specifically mean. The text in green or red is anything I listed in the discussion.
Pitch :
- Group NDA, contracts and environmental impact statement - Need to check it is all done, if not doesn't take long. This is self-explanatory, but I plan to do these myself if these aren't completed in time for the summative submission of this project, and then present them both in my blog and in the PowerPoint.- Elevator Pitch I have completed this. It is a brief explanation of what our game is about. I also included key tags and mechanics to describe specifically what we are doing and going for in our game. As the director, I felt I was best suited for this.
- Mood boards - Probably get more done to show the things we did after the formative. I advised everyone to do this to illustrate their ideas more accurately before moving onto any thumbnailing, concept work or 3D work.
- Ideas and Concepts Research Dossier - Everyone contributes something to do with different aspects of the game. E.g. Katie does coral research, Jake does flood research etc. This is subject to change, but this is the plan to complete our research. With our former research lead no longer being in our group, as the director it is my job to plan around it. This is the plan for now, but only while I think about the best way to plan research.
- Target Audience - discuss why the age group we chose would be the best financially as well. I had already made the two slides on the target audience, which mainly focused on why the age group we had chosen would make the most sense since they would be the most interested in the themes of the game. I also have to go back and describe why it would make the most financial sense as well.
- Scheduling and Roadmapping/ Important communication milestones - Talk about group meetings more I feel like we have already shown a lot of our group meetings and planning surrounding this project.
-Feedback - Get more and mention it more in the pitch and in the blog. For this I'm going to start with the feedback from the pitch presentation, but then move onto showing my work to other members of my group/ other groups for feedback.
- Preliminary 2D and 3D designs - Thumbnails, early low-poly 3D models that were important for establishing concepts. For me specifically, this means more thumbnails, and screenshots of 3D models in their early stages. With a lot of 3D models, I prefer to start working in 3D, most often with weapons and equipment as I am able to conceptualise what I want to create much quicker and faster, maybe with the help of thumbnails.
- Final 2D and 3D - for 2D concept pieces we have already done: Get feedback on them and refine them. by the end of the project we want to get a concept piece/ orthographic sheet done for a character, a creature, and then for example a boat and an environment from each person. As the director its important for me to list what I expect from all members of my group. I gave them an example at the end, as I want something along the same lines that brings life to the game we want to create. For me I am creating a harpoon gun.
For 3D, we want to collectively model a 3D space - we will discuss this more with the 3D lead when they have time. IMPORTANT: MAKE ORTHOGRAPHICS FOR ANYTHING YOU PLAN TO MODEL AND MAKE SURE YOU UV MAP AS YOU GO TO MAKE IT EASIER!!! In the meantime:
Katie: model a coral, model a fish that lives within the coral, Model the microplastic turtle.
Jake: Model a fin whale, model a harpoon gun and an oxygen tank, start modelling buildings for an area of Nottingham
Atticus (3D Lead) : Model a character, model a boat, model the humpback whale.
Rosie: Model different types of flora (trees, plants.)
I want to have a 3D space created by the end of this project. If I cannot get a space with everyone having their models in it, then I will try to bring my own models into unreal so that anyone can view them, and it could serve as a basis in the future should my group members ever want to add their own 3D assets too.
Blog:
Here I just listed what is expected of us to my group for clarity's sake. I will use this in the future to check over my work and see if I have fulfilled all criteria.
- All early concept designs
- All final concept designs
- 2D and 3D Production diary
- Discussion of job role and industry expectations
- Discussion of environmental impact mitigation
- Discussion of the role of QA in the pre-production design process
- Discussion of target audience and your expectations for meeting their needs
- Evidence of discussion, feedback and review
- Reflective statement
Aesthetic:
For the Aesthetic, we looked at a lot of different options, and we decided that we are going for a more industrial rustic approach. This is because it compliments what we have done so far, as well as other ideas that we are having right now. E.g. Katie suggests that maybe there could be oil spillages or leaks in the water that threaten sealife and nature. I will explore this more in the future with assets and concept work.
