Toolkit 2D - Session 2, Perspective Grids

 Toolkit 2D - Perspective Grids

In this session, we went through previous perspective grids we had learnt, as well as some new ones.
Firstly we went through 2 point perspective again. I remembered how to do this, so I was able to construct the grid. 2 point perspective is what I mainly used and still use when drawing backgrounds, so I am more familiar with this than I am with other grids.

Next up was 3 point perspective. Since this is basically just 2 point perspective but with an extra point to create a birds/worms eye view, it was relatively easy to construct, but I still will need to practice it more to understand it better.
The first new perspective grid we constructed was 5 point perspective. The construction of this involves placing all 4 points from a 3 point perspective grid (both the bottom and top points) as well as a centre point. Using this, we then arc from a point to the opposing point to create a fish eye lens perspective. We then have the guidelines to create shapes in that perspective.
The final new perspective type we looked at was a specific type of perspective we can use to construct fences. This uses the law of diminution to allow us to accurately draw objects that are equidistant away from each other. This can be used within other types of perspective grids to construct accurately spaced out objects e.g. streetlamps or fences.

After learning these types of perspective, we were then tasked with using multiple two point perspective guidelines to create a place, for example a tavern. I picked a tavern for this, and began drawing the base of it.

After drawing the base of it, I began to actually draw in the details and the lines themselves.
After this, I added some simple shading, and was done with this exercise.
Now that I was done with this exercise, I can definitely see the added levels of complexity when using multiple perspective points in the same composition. However, this is offset by making a more visually appealing composition overall. I will practice this going forward, since I wasn't particularly happy about this attempt, and feel as if I implemented the additional perspective points badly.
